# Private WAN or internet VPN for multiple sites?

For an organisation whose sites must work together reliably, a provider-operated private WAN is a stronger foundation than joining independent internet connections with VPNs or an SD-WAN overlay. It puts the inter-site network inside a defined operational boundary.

## Choose a network with a clear operational owner

A collection of internet circuits can connect branches, but the business then needs an overlay to make those connections behave as one network. Internet VPNs add tunnels and routing policy. SD-WAN adds another layer of path selection and management. Neither changes who owns the underlying access and onward internet paths.

That distinction matters during an incident. An application team sees a slow central system, the overlay reports that its tunnels are up and individual access providers see no local fault. The customer can be left coordinating evidence across several organisations before anyone can identify where performance changed.

A routed, isolated, provider-operated private WAN brings inter-site connectivity into a more coherent service. The design can establish which sites exchange traffic, which routes exist and who investigates the service between them. This is the practical strength of the MPLS-style private WAN model, rather than a claim that one protocol removes every possible outage.

Netavo offers [private WAN and UK connectivity](https://netavo.com/services/connectivity). The case for that approach is strongest when branches depend on shared business systems and the organisation wants a defined network responsibility. Procurement should make that responsibility explicit, including the access boundaries and the customer equipment that remain outside it.

## Control routes and isolation before adding complexity

A private WAN provides a deliberate place to organise addressing and inter-site routing. Plan the address space, identify overlapping networks and decide which locations need direct reachability. Keep guest access, operational systems and business applications separated according to their requirements rather than allowing the historical shape of VPN tunnels to become the architecture.

Isolation from the public internet is valuable because inter-site transport need not rely on exposing those routes publicly. It does not replace authentication, endpoint security or encryption where the application requires it. Private describes the connectivity boundary, not a guarantee that every device inside it is trustworthy.

An internet overlay still needs these decisions, plus the management of its tunnels, internet-facing edges and interactions with several underlays. SD-WAN can select among available paths, but it cannot create capacity in a congested access link or turn uncontracted public-internet behaviour into an end-to-end performance commitment. Its additional controls also need competent ownership throughout the service lifecycle.

For [retail and multi-site businesses](https://netavo.com/sectors/retail-and-multi-site), consistency is often more valuable than a large menu of routing features. A branch should have a clear connection model, a known route to shared systems and a documented fault boundary. A private WAN supports that disciplined operating model without making the customer assemble it from unrelated internet services.

## Specify predictable operation and test the whole service

Predictability must be designed and contracted. Ask how the WAN accommodates critical traffic, what performance measures apply and how each access circuit contributes to the service. Do not assume the word private supplies unlimited capacity, automatic resilience or a particular restoration target. Check the actual proposal and the conditions at every location.

Cloud access also needs a deliberate design. Establish where traffic leaves the private network for internet-hosted applications and what happens if that exit becomes unavailable. Some workloads remain wholly between sites, while others depend on public services. Draw both paths so that a sound private WAN is not undermined by an overlooked shared dependency.

A hypothetical branch might need continuous access to an ordering system while backups can wait. Specify the essential traffic and the degraded operating mode before selecting circuit sizes. Then test representative transactions, voice calls and large transfers together. Confirm that local switches and wireless networks do not become the bottleneck after the WAN is improved.

Compare the full operating effort over the contract period. Include configuration changes, monitoring, incident coordination, equipment replacement and the knowledge needed when staff leave. An overlay may appear attractive when compared only with circuit prices, yet leave those obligations spread across the customer and several suppliers. A private WAN is the stronger default for an integrated multi-site estate because its network design and operational ownership can be agreed together.

## Common questions

### Does a private WAN remove the need for encryption?

No. Isolation and encryption serve different purposes. Apply encryption and access controls according to the application and information being carried.

### Can SD-WAN repair a poor underlying connection?

It may choose another usable path in a suitably designed deployment, but it cannot repair the original access fault or provide capacity that the available links do not have.

### Is every private WAN automatically resilient?

No. Circuit diversity, customer equipment, power, shared services and recovery behaviour must all be designed and tested against the failures the business needs to survive.
