Traffic Management

Netavo provides mobile and fixed connectivity for UK traffic management providers and operators, linking roadside equipment to central systems. Private networking connects the customer's signals, signs and monitoring devices to the applications that manage them.

What the sector requires

Roadside equipment is distributed across locations with different access options. A cabinet may have no suitable fixed line, while a control centre or a site carrying more traffic may need fibre or Ethernet. The network design needs to account for each site's communications demand and the systems it reports to.

Operators also need to manage connections as installations are added, moved or retired. Private addressing and a defined route to central systems help keep roadside devices off the public internet. Where a second path is required, the fixed and mobile connections need to be considered together.

  • Access at each siteMobile or fixed connectivity selected for the location
  • Private communicationsA defined route to central systems
  • ContinuityMobile failover alongside fixed access where required
  • Estate changesActivation and suspension as equipment enters or leaves service

How we support it

The connectivity follows the roadside equipment and control systems selected by the customer.

Requirement How we meet it
Connecting roadside cabinets Multi-network mobile data with access to all four UK mobile networks
Matching the device's SIM format Physical SIMs in standard and industrial formats, with eSIM also available
Sites requiring fixed access Fibre broadband and Ethernet selected around availability and capacity requirements
Keeping roadside devices private Private addressing and a private SIM network without public internet exposure
Reaching a control centre An encrypted connection to the customer's network or integration with an existing private WAN
Reaching cloud applications Private cloud interconnect for mobile device traffic
A second path for a fixed connection Mobile failover alongside fixed access
Managing the mobile estate SIM activation, suspension and usage reporting through the portal or API
Matching data use across sites Individual data allowances or a shared allowance pooled across the SIM fleet

Typical connectivity patterns

Site or use Connectivity approach Design consideration
Roadside cabinet without a fixed line Multi-network mobile data Coverage at the installation and the route to central systems
Permanent site with fixed access Fibre or Ethernet with mobile failover where required Available access and the capacity used by the equipment
Temporary roadside installation Mobile data activated as the equipment goes live Data allowance and suspension when the installation is removed
Estate reporting to a cloud application Private mobile network with cloud interconnect Addressing and the application's network destination

Connecting the equipment to its destination

A private route to control systems

A private SIM network can be joined to the customer's existing corporate network or connected to a cloud environment. Roadside devices do not need public addresses or individual encrypted tunnels. Fixed sites can sit alongside mobile connections on the same private network.

Managing connectivity and traffic operations

The SIM portal provides activation, suspension and usage reporting for the mobile connections. Traffic control, equipment monitoring and operational decisions remain with the customer's systems. Netavo provides the network paths those systems use.

Changes across the estate

SIMs can be supplied inactive and activated as devices go live. Usage can be reviewed per SIM, allowances adjusted as the estate changes and connections suspended or ceased when equipment is retired.

A typical engagement

A typical engagement begins with a partner's roadside estate and the destinations its equipment needs to reach. We agree a connectivity design for each site type, using mobile where fixed access is unsuitable and fibre or Ethernet where available and appropriate. Private routing brings those connections back to the partner's central systems. The partner installs and commissions its roadside equipment, activating mobile connections as sites enter service and reviewing usage as the estate grows.

Discuss a traffic management requirement

Tell us where the equipment is installed, how it communicates and which systems it needs to reach. We will respond with a recommended design and pricing.
