Static IP and Private APN SIMs for IoT Fleets

Netavo SIMs can carry a fixed address, public or private, and can sit on a private network that never touches the internet. Because the addressing is set on our own mobile core, a device keeps its address whichever network it attaches to, and your systems can reach it directly.

Reach every device at a known address

Remote maintenance, polling and device management all depend on knowing where a device is. On an ordinary mobile connection that address changes, and usually sits behind someone else's NAT, so the device can call out but nothing can call in.

A Netavo SIM can be given a fixed address on our own mobile core, and keep it on every connection, on whichever mobile network it attaches to. That address can be private, on a network only you can reach, or public where a device must be reachable from the internet.

Choose the addressing per fleet

Option What it gives you Suited to
Private static A fixed private address, reachable only across your private network Devices your systems poll or manage, kept off the internet
Private dynamic A private address from a pool, on the same private network Devices that report in, with no need to be called
Public static A fixed public address, reachable from the internet Devices that must accept connections from anywhere, behind their own controls
Public dynamic Ordinary internet access Devices that only need to reach out

Four ways to reach a private fleet

A private SIM network is delivered to wherever your systems are, and more than one way at once.

Delivery How it works
IPsec An encrypted tunnel from our network to your own
Cloud interconnect Directly into AWS or Azure, with no internet in between
Corporate WAN Joined to an existing MPLS network, alongside fibre and Ethernet sites
L2TP to your LNS Each SIM as a session on your own LNS, addressed by your RADIUS

Private APN, without the misunderstandings

A private APN keeps a fleet's traffic on a private network, separate from the internet. It isolates routing; it does not by itself encrypt application data or decide who may reach a device. Those are still yours to define, with the access controls and application security the fleet needs.

We set out exactly what a private APN does and does not do, and how to choose between static addressing, private routing and device-initiated access, in two guides.

Common questions

Can a Netavo data SIM have a static IP address?

Yes. Netavo SIMs can be given a static private or public address on Netavo's own mobile core, kept on every connection and every mobile network the SIM uses.

What is the difference between a private and a public static IP SIM?

A private static address is reachable only across your private network; a public static address is reachable from the internet. Both stay the same on every connection.

How do we reach SIMs on a private APN?

Over an IPsec tunnel to your network, by direct cloud interconnect into AWS or Azure, through an existing corporate MPLS WAN, or by L2TP to your own LNS.

Does a private APN encrypt our data?

A private APN isolates routing but does not by itself encrypt application data. Traffic can be carried over IPsec, and devices should still protect their own application traffic.

Do static IP SIMs work on all UK networks?

Yes. Netavo SIMs use all four UK mobile networks, and the address is set on Netavo's own mobile core, so it does not change when a SIM moves between networks.
