Lift emergency comms after the PSTN
A lift emergency phone has to work when someone is trapped, including in a power cut. As analogue lines are withdrawn, that guarantee has to be rebuilt on a new connection, and the responsibility for proving it does not move with the line.
Survey with the lift maintainer, not instead of them
Replacing the line into a lift is the easy part. The verification is the real work, and it is a joint job with the lift maintainer. Confirm the emergency communication equipment is compatible with the new path. Check connectivity actually reaches into the shaft and the car, where radio coverage is often poor. Confirm backup power keeps the emergency phone working through a mains failure, because that is precisely when it is needed. Confirm the automatic test calls a lift is required to make still complete, and that calls are received where they should be.
None of this is connectivity alone. A working data path to the lift motor room does not prove a trapped passenger can speak to someone. The complete lift alarm system, and the standards it must meet, remain the responsibility of the lift maintainer and the building operator.
Connectivity that reaches difficult places
Lift shafts are hard radio environments, so coverage has to be verified at the car, not assumed from a signal outside the building, and an external antenna is often part of the answer. Keeping the lift line on a reliable, managed path, separate from other building systems, keeps it simple to support.
Netavo provides multi-network IoT connectivity on its own mobile core, which can serve lift communications where a fixed line is being withdrawn. Lift phones can run as lines on Netavo's hosted voice platform over that connectivity. Conformance of the complete lift alarm system with the relevant lift communication standard remains with the lift maintainer, so verify it together.
Common questions
Does a data connection make a lift phone compliant?
No. A data path to the lift does not prove a trapped passenger can speak to someone. The emergency voice equipment, in-shaft coverage, backup power and conformance to the relevant standard all have to be verified with the lift maintainer.
Why survey inside the shaft?
Lift shafts are poor radio environments. Coverage must be confirmed at the car, not inferred from a signal outside the building, and an external antenna is often needed.
Who is responsible for the lift alarm working?
The lift maintainer and building operator own the complete lift alarm system and its standards. The connectivity provider supplies and supports the path; the two must be verified together.
