PSTN Switch-off

Netavo provides cellular replacements for legacy PSTN voice and signalling applications, alongside cloud voice, alarm signalling and mobile data, for UK organisations and partners migrating services from the PSTN. The replacement is selected around what each line does, from office calls to alarm transmission and connected equipment data.

What the sector requires

A telephone line may serve an office, an alarm or a piece of equipment with its own communication requirements. A list of billed numbers alone does not establish what must be replaced. The organisation needs to identify the application, its destination and the supplier responsible for the connected equipment.

Voice, signalling and device data need different migration plans. Number retention matters for established contact numbers, while alarm transmission requires agreement on paths and the receiving centre. Any equipment-dependent service needs its compatibility and handover requirements established before the existing line is ceased.

  • Known dependenciesThe purpose and connected equipment identified for each line
  • Appropriate replacementVoice, signalling or data selected by application
  • Continuity of contactNumber porting and call routing planned together
  • Controlled handoverReplacement service proven before the old line is ceased

How we support it

Supported capabilities for a migration plan agreed with the organisation and its equipment providers.

Requirement How we meet it
Analogue lines serving equipment A cellular replacement for legacy PSTN voice and signalling applications
Lift alarms and call points A cellular voice line in place of the copper line, with multi-network coverage
Moving office calls to a hosted service Hosted telephony with call queues, ring groups and time-of-day routing
Retaining an existing business phone system Trunks into a customer's compatible phone system, with the design agreed before migration
A simple business calling service Single-line services with a number and an app
Keeping established contact numbers Existing numbers ported on an agreed date
Replacing legacy fire or intruder alarm signalling Multi-path signalling with continuous verification of every path
Retaining alarm receiving arrangements Integration with the main UK alarm receiving centres
Connecting devices that support mobile data Multi-network SIMs with private addressing and routes to central systems
Providing access for replacement services Fibre and Ethernet connectivity with mobile failover where required

Matching the replacement to the application

Office voice has several supported routes. A business can move to hosted telephony, use a single-line service or retain a compatible phone system with trunking. Call handling and number porting are planned together before numbers move.

Alarm transmission has its own path design. Netavo's signalling supports fixed and multi-network mobile paths, verified continuously. We establish which paths the site can support and confirm the alarm receiving centre before delivery.

Lines serving equipment can be replaced over the mobile network. For legacy voice and signalling applications that depended on an analogue line, such as lift alarms and call points, Netavo provides a cellular replacement carried over multi-network mobile coverage. Equipment that already supports mobile data can instead be given a multi-network SIM. In either case the requirements of the connected equipment are confirmed with the supplier responsible for it before a replacement is agreed.

Planning an estate migration

01

Identify what each line serves

Bring together the numbers, site addresses, connected applications and equipment supplier details. Separate voice requirements from alarm signalling and device data.

02

Agree the replacement design

Select the supported service for each application. Agree number moves, available signalling paths and the route for device data with the people responsible for each system.

03

Migrate and prove the service

Plan cutover around site operations. Confirm the replacement works for its intended application before arranging cessation of the old line; signalling paths are proven before handover.

A typical engagement

A typical engagement begins with an estate containing office numbers, alarm lines and connections to equipment. The partner identifies each line's purpose with the customer and the relevant equipment suppliers. We agree the supported voice, signalling and data services, then plan migration in phases. Office numbers move on agreed dates, alarm paths are proven with receiving centre arrangements confirmed, and equipment-dependent connections proceed once their requirements are established. The old services are ceased only after the replacements have been proven.

Discuss a PSTN replacement requirement

Tell us about the lines, locations and applications involved. We will identify the Netavo capabilities that fit the migration and the equipment requirements that need confirming.
