What is DIA? Dedicated Internet Access Explained

Dedicated internet access, usually shortened to DIA, is a leased line used to reach the internet. The capacity is reserved for one customer, it is the same in both directions, and it is delivered over a fibre circuit built for that site rather than shared with the street.

Connectivity & WAN

What makes it dedicated

A broadband connection shares capacity. The fibre from a cabinet or a street splitter serves many premises, and the network beyond it is sized on the expectation that they will not all be busy at once. Most of the time that works well; at the busiest moments, everyone on the shared part of the path competes for it.

DIA is built the other way round. An Ethernet circuit runs from the provider's network to the customer's premises, and the capacity on it is reserved for that customer alone. Upload and download are the same, so sending a backup to the cloud is as fast as receiving one. The circuit connects to the provider's core network, which in turn connects to the wider internet.

The term is used to distinguish an internet leased line from a private one. A point-to-point leased line joins two of the customer's own sites and carries nothing else; a DIA leased line joins a site to the internet.

DIA and broadband compared

Business broadband Dedicated internet access
Capacity Shared with other users Reserved for one customer
Upload and download Usually different The same
Circuit Shared access network Fibre built to the site
Speeds Up to 2300M on FTTP 100M to 10G
Installation Typically days to weeks Typically longer, with a survey and build
Suits Branches, small sites, home workers Head offices, hosting, heavy upload, many users

Bearer and committed rate

A DIA quote usually names two speeds. The bearer is the physical capacity of the circuit, commonly 1G or 10G. The committed rate is the bandwidth the customer actually buys on it, which can be lower — a 1G bearer carrying a 300M service, for example.

The distinction is useful. Raising the committed rate on an existing bearer is a change to the service rather than a new installation, so a site that expects to grow can start lower and increase later without another build. When comparing quotes, compare the committed rate against the committed rate, and treat a larger bearer as room to grow rather than capacity already paid for.

What drives the cost of a leased line

Leased line prices vary more than broadband prices because each circuit is built for its address. The main factors are the committed rate and bearer; how far the site is from the nearest point where fibre can be picked up; whether new ducts, cabling or permissions are needed to reach it, which can bring excess construction charges; the length of the contract; and whether a second, diverse circuit is needed for resilience.

An availability check gives a starting figure, but the survey settles it. That is why two neighbouring buildings can receive different quotes, and why a quote is usually valid only for a set period. Ordering a leased line explains the stages between quote and live service.

When DIA is the right choice

DIA fits a site where the internet connection is critical to the work and the busiest hour cannot be allowed to slow it down: a head office whose staff all work from cloud applications, a site that hosts services for others, a business that uploads large files throughout the day, or a hub that the rest of a network depends on.

It is not automatically the answer for every site. A branch with a handful of staff may be well served by full fibre broadband with a mobile second path, at a fraction of the cost. Ethernet leased line or business FTTP? works through that comparison. Where a site does need DIA, the circuit is usually only half of the decision: two circuits that share a route can still fail together.

Netavo provides dedicated internet access from 100M to 10G across the UK's access networks, carried on its own core network, directly and through partners, with a diverse second circuit or mobile failover where a site needs one. For smaller sites that need an Ethernet service without a dedicated build, Ethernet over FTTP or SOGEA is often the better fit.

Common questions

What does DIA stand for?

DIA stands for dedicated internet access: an Ethernet leased line to the internet, with capacity reserved for one customer and the same speed in both directions.

Is DIA the same as a leased line?

DIA is one kind of leased line, used to reach the internet. A point-to-point leased line instead joins two of the customer's own sites.

What is the difference between bearer and bandwidth?

The bearer is the physical capacity of the circuit, such as 1G or 10G. The bandwidth, or committed rate, is the speed the customer buys on it, which can be raised later without a new installation.

Why does DIA take longer to install than broadband?

Each DIA circuit is built to its site, so it needs a survey and sometimes new ducts, cabling or permissions before it can be installed and tested.

What speeds does Netavo offer for DIA?

Netavo provides dedicated internet access from 100M to 10G, carried on its own core network across the UK's access networks.
