What is SOGEA? Broadband Without a Phone Line
SOGEA is the way fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband is now sold in the UK: the same connection a business has known as FTTC, ordered on its own, without the analogue phone line it used to depend on. As the traditional phone network is withdrawn, it is what most part-fibre lines become.
What SOGEA stands for
SOGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access. “Generic Ethernet Access” is Openreach's name for its fibre broadband products; “single order” is the part that matters. For most of the last decade, fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband was sold as an add-on to a telephone line: the line had to be ordered, rented and kept in service first, and the broadband rode on top of it.
SOGEA removes that dependency. The copper pair from the street cabinet to the premises is still used, and the fibre still runs from the exchange to the cabinet, but the line is ordered and supplied as a data service alone. There is no dial tone and no telephone number on the line itself.
In everyday use the connection behaves like the FTTC broadband it replaces. Speeds depend on the distance between the premises and the cabinet, in the same way, and the same equipment can usually be used.
SOGEA, FTTC and FTTP compared
| FTTC | SOGEA | FTTP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre reaches | The street cabinet | The street cabinet | The premises |
| Final connection | Copper pair | Copper pair | Fibre |
| Phone line needed | Yes | No | No |
| Typical top speed | Up to 80/20 | Up to 80/20 | Up to 2300M |
| Speed depends on distance | Yes | Yes | No |
| Where it fits | Being replaced by SOGEA | Sites without full fibre | Wherever full fibre is available |
SOGEA vs FTTC
SOGEA and FTTC are the same broadband technology. The difference is commercial and practical rather than technical: FTTC needs a working telephone line beneath it, and SOGEA does not.
That has three consequences for a business. There is one line rental rather than two, so the cost of a phone line that nobody uses disappears. There is one service to fault and repair, rather than a line and a broadband service that can each be blamed on the other. And there is no dependence on the analogue phone network, which is being withdrawn across the UK.
Anything that used the phone line has to be planned for before the move. Telephone calls move to a cloud voice service carried over the broadband. Alarm diallers, lift lines, card terminals and franking machines that dial out over copper need their own replacement, which is often the part of a migration that takes longest. Our PSTN migration audit guide covers how to find them.
SOGEA vs FTTP
Full fibre is the better connection wherever it can be ordered. It is faster, its speed does not fall away with distance from the cabinet, and it has no copper to degrade in wet weather. Where FTTP is available at a site, it is normally the right choice, and SOGEA is the fallback rather than the goal.
SOGEA earns its place at the sites full fibre has not yet reached, and in estates where a single, consistent service is needed across every branch now rather than as each street is upgraded. Because both are ordered without a phone line, a site can move from SOGEA to FTTP later without changing how its voice or its network is arranged.
Moving a site to SOGEA
For a single site, the move is usually straightforward: the broadband is re-provided as SOGEA on the same copper pair, the router is reconnected, and the old phone line is ceased. The work is in what surrounds it — confirming the number on the line is not still published or relied on, porting it to a cloud voice service if it is, and replacing any equipment that dials out.
For an estate, the useful approach is to check every address once, record which sites can take FTTP and which need SOGEA, and move them in batches with the voice and alarm changes planned alongside. Netavo provides SOGEA and full fibre broadband on its own core network, directly and through partners who sell it under their own brand.
Common questions
What does SOGEA stand for?
SOGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access: fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband ordered on its own, without a telephone line beneath it.
Is SOGEA the same as FTTC?
It uses the same technology and gives the same speeds. The difference is that FTTC needs a working phone line and SOGEA does not.
Can I make phone calls on a SOGEA line?
Not over the line itself, which carries data only. Calls move to a cloud voice service carried over the broadband, such as Netavo's cloud voice.
Is SOGEA full fibre?
No. Fibre runs to the street cabinet and copper carries the last part of the journey. Full fibre (FTTP) runs fibre all the way to the premises.
Should a business choose SOGEA or FTTP?
FTTP wherever it is available. SOGEA suits sites that full fibre has not yet reached, and can be upgraded to FTTP later without changing the voice arrangements.
