Mobile Operators & MVNOs
Netavo provides regional internet breakout and IPSec termination around the world for mobile operators and MVNOs, so that traffic reaches the internet close to the subscriber and not in the home network. We work with your engineers on capacity, addressing and the route between your mobile core and its destinations.
What the sector requires
The route taken by mobile traffic matters as well as radio coverage. Carrying roaming traffic back to a home network can add distance to the path and present an internet address associated with a different country. Operators need to consider where traffic reaches the internet and how that affects the subscriber's experience.
Connected-device services bring a further requirement. Traffic may need to reach a private application rather than the public internet. Capacity, addressing and the boundary between the operator's network and the destination therefore need to be agreed together, while the operator retains its subscriber relationships.
- A local experienceInternet access from an address in the subscriber's own country
- Traffic destinationInternet access or a private application network
- AddressingAn address plan appropriate to the service
- InterconnectionCapacity and routing agreed between engineers
- OperationsMonitoring and direct engineering support
How we support it
The service design depends on whether traffic is internet-bound or destined for private systems.
| Requirement | How we meet it |
|---|---|
| Internet access close to the subscriber | Regional internet breakout, with local addressing in each country served |
| A secure connection to your mobile core | IPSec termination, designed with your engineers |
| Upstream internet capacity | Resilient IP transit over IPv4 and IPv6 for networks with their own address space |
| Connecting network locations | Backhaul between sites, datacentres and core locations |
| Private access to a SIM fleet | Encrypted interconnection between the private mobile network and your own network |
| Reaching cloud-hosted applications | Private mobile connectivity with cloud interconnect |
| Joining fixed and mobile estates | Private mobile networking alongside fibre and Ethernet on a corporate WAN |
| Controlling mobile addressing | Private or public addressing with static or dynamic options on our mobile data service |
| Operating an ISP interconnect | Continuous monitoring and direct access to the engineering team |
In practice: connected vehicles
We delivered regional internet breakout for an in-vehicle internet service offered by global vehicle manufacturers, working in collaboration with a major international mobile operator.
The service provides passengers with Wi-Fi in the car, carried over the mobile network. The requirement was for internet access appropriate to the country where the vehicle was being driven, including local addressing and a local traffic path. Carrying every vehicle's traffic back to a single home network did not meet that requirement.
We designed and operated local internet breakout in more than twenty countries. Traffic from the operator's mobile core was received over encrypted tunnels and released to the internet within the country where the vehicle was being driven, from an address local to it. The operator retained its subscribers and its relationship with the manufacturers throughout; we provided the breakout, the secure termination and the operation of both.
Separating internet access from private device traffic
Internet-bound services
Internet transit provides upstream connectivity for operators with their own address space. Capacity, handover and routing are designed around the operator's network. The connected-vehicle project illustrates a particular regional breakout deployment; the locations and design for a new requirement need to be agreed separately.
Private application access
Netavo's mobile data service can place a SIM fleet on a private network, reached from the customer's own network, cloud environment or corporate WAN. Devices do not need public addresses or an individual encrypted tunnel of their own. This is relevant where devices report to central systems instead of providing general internet access.
How a deployment is delivered
Design
Agree the destinations, capacity, addressing and interconnection around the operator's network design. For mobile data estates, establish the coverage and route to the application systems.
Deliver
Provision and test the interconnects with your engineers, with a planned migration of existing traffic where required.
Operate
Monitor the network service continuously, with direct access to engineering support. Review mobile data usage and allowances as a connected-device estate grows.
A typical engagement
A typical engagement begins with the operator's traffic destinations and existing network boundaries. We agree which traffic requires internet access and which requires a private route to application systems, then define capacity and handover with the operator's engineers. Interconnect testing and any migration are planned around that design, with the operator retaining responsibility for its subscriber relationships.
