Local breakout questions
The questions mobile operators, MVNOs and IoT connectivity providers ask about regional internet breakout, each answered briefly.
The service
What is local internet breakout?
Local internet breakout releases a mobile subscriber's traffic to the internet in the region the subscriber is in, instead of carrying it back to the operator's home network first. Netavo provides breakout points for this around the world.
Why does local breakout matter for roaming subscribers?
Home-routed traffic adds delay and gives the subscriber an internet address in the wrong country, so services respond in the wrong language or offer the wrong content. Local breakout gives the subscriber a local address and a shorter path.
Who does Netavo provide local breakout for?
Netavo provides regional internet breakout for mobile network operators, MVNOs and MVNEs, IoT connectivity providers and connected-vehicle programmes.
Where does Netavo provide breakout?
Netavo provides breakout points around the world. The regions for a particular service are agreed in its design, around where the subscribers are.
Interconnection
How does an operator hand traffic to Netavo?
An operator hands subscriber traffic to Netavo over IPSec tunnels, or through a direct on-net network-to-network interconnect. The two can be combined, with a direct interconnect in some regions and IPSec in others.
Do we need to be in the same datacentre as Netavo?
No. IPSec needs only internet connectivity at each end, so an operator can reach any Netavo breakout point without being physically present there. A direct interconnect suits operators already present in the same datacentres.
Does the operator keep its subscribers?
Yes. The operator keeps its subscribers, its tariffs and its mobile core. Netavo provides the breakout points, the termination of the traffic handed to them, and their operation.
At the breakout point
What does a Netavo breakout point provide?
Each Netavo breakout point provides local public addressing, carrier-grade NAT, IPv6 and DNS, and receives traffic from the operator over IPSec or a direct interconnect.
Will subscribers have an address in the country they are in?
Yes. Traffic leaves a Netavo breakout point from public addresses registered in the country the subscriber is in.
Does Netavo's breakout support IPv6?
Yes. Netavo's breakout points provide native IPv6 to the internet alongside IPv4.
Why is DNS resolved at the breakout point?
Internet services use DNS to direct each user to their nearest servers. Resolving names at the breakout point means a subscriber is sent to servers near where they actually are, matching their local address.
Are the breakout points Netavo's own?
Yes. Each breakout point is Netavo's own equipment in a datacentre, operated by Netavo, which runs its own network as AS208802.
Uses
Can local breakout be used for a travel eSIM?
Yes. Breakout in the destination region gives a travel eSIM's customers a local address and local performance in the country they are visiting.
Can local breakout be used for IoT devices?
Yes. Regional breakout keeps the traffic of devices deployed across many countries within each device's own region, instead of carrying it all to one home country.
Has Netavo delivered local breakout for connected vehicles?
Yes. Netavo designed and delivered regional internet breakout for an in-vehicle Wi-Fi service offered by global vehicle manufacturers, working with a major international mobile operator.
Can traffic be delivered privately instead of to the internet?
Yes. An enterprise customer's SIM traffic can be delivered privately into that customer's own network or cloud environment, over IPSec or a direct interconnect, without touching the public internet.
