Local breakout for in-vehicle internet
Netavo designed and delivered regional internet breakout for an in-vehicle internet service offered by global vehicle manufacturers, working with a major international mobile operator. The parties cannot be named, but the problem and the design can be described.
The service
The service gave passengers Wi-Fi in the car, carried over the mobile network. It was a consumer product, sold with the vehicle, and used by people who had no reason to know or care how it reached the internet.
The vehicles were sold and driven in many countries, and crossed borders in ordinary use. The connectivity came from one international mobile operator.

Why local breakout mattered
A passenger using Wi-Fi in a car expects what they would get from any connection in that country: sites in their own language, the services and content available there, and pages that load promptly.
Carrying every vehicle's traffic back to a single home network could not provide that. Passengers would have appeared to every website to be in another country, and would have been served accordingly. For a product sold on the experience it gave, that was not acceptable.
- LanguageThe right one for the country
- ContentWhat is available locally
- PerformanceThat of a local connection
- Home routingCould provide none of these
The design
What we designed
Netavo designed local internet breakout for the countries the service covered. Traffic from the operator's mobile core was received over encrypted tunnels and released to the internet within the country where the vehicle was being driven, from an address local to it.
As a vehicle crossed a border, its traffic moved to the breakout for the country it had entered. The passenger saw nothing of this, which was the object.

Who did what
The operator retained its subscribers and its relationship with the manufacturers throughout. Netavo provided the breakout and the secure termination of the traffic handed to it. The manufacturers offered their customers a service that behaved as a local one, wherever the car was.
